We know how busy the PR and communications world is, and how difficult it can be to stay up to date on the latest news affecting the industry.
Fortunately, there are a ton of great newsletters out there curating the latest media news, insights, and long reads. Whether you’re looking for public relations headlines, a broad look at journalism and media, or general updates on the topics and tech impacting the industry, there’s a newsletter that fits the bill.
Take a look at the 15 options below (covering a wide range of PR-related subjects) and subscribe to the ones that pique your interest.
Best PR & Comms Newsletters
Axios Communicators
Axios writer (and communications strategist) Eleanor Hawkins sends this weekly (every Thursday) roundup of digital media news from the publisher famed for its “Smart Brevity.” A word count and estimated reading time are included, so you can set aside time to read it in full. Plus, stories are broken down into sections like “Why it matters,” “The big picture,” and “The bottom line,” surfacing essential details and making each story easily digestible.
PRDaily
This newsletter from Ragan’s PRDaily news website brings the latest PR and comms headlines, research, trends, and tips directly to your inbox every day. Its curated picks cover crisis communications, measurement, marketing, social media, and pretty much any facet of PR you can think of. It's ideal if you’re a PRDaily reader but don’t have the time to scour the entire website in depth each day.
MarketingProfs Today
This long-running daily newsletter (the first edition was sent back in 2001) from Ann Handley offers valuable marketing insights to its 600,000-plus subscriber base. It’s a great B2B resource for MarketingProfs’ own in-depth articles, infographics, and thought starters like “Why didn’t I think of that?” observations or inspiring quotes from industry leaders. It also offers a PRO subscription (from $279 annually) to unlock benefits like webinars and a Slack community.
PRWeek Dashboard Weekly
One of the industry’s most respected publications, PRWeek offers several different regular newsletters (and regional editions for the UK and Middle East) to keep you informed on the news that matters. You’ll need to be a subscriber to PRWeek to get some of these, but the Healthcare Weekley, Breaking News Alert, and Dashboard Weekly are all free. We’d recommend starting with the latter, a summary of the week’s top news stories and updates on initiatives like the PRWeek Awards and DE&I Digest.
PRovoke Global Briefing
PRovoke’s weekly newsletter gives an in-depth perspective on all things PR, mixing research, case studies, and industry reports. Founded in 2000 by Paul Holmes as the Holmes Report, it’s backed by a wealth of expertise in public relations and a worthwhile read for any comms pro. There’s also an accompanying Marketing and Events newsletter featuring updates about PRovoke’s global events program and other marketing initiatives.
Sword and the Script
Sword and the Script's weekly newsletter brings together the site's articles on PR, marketing, and social media. The focus is largely on B2B, but there are plenty of lessons all comms pros can take away from each email. If you’re not sure about adding another weekly email to your subscriptions, then you could instead opt for Sword and the Script’s Monthly Scripts newsletter.
Best Journalism & Media Newsletters
Nieman Lab’s Daily Digest
From the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard, Nieman Lab is a media industry bible looking to understand where journalism sits in the digital age. Its newsletter, which has nearly 70,000 subscribers, brings together the most important industry stories, both from Nieman and external sources. Expect it in your inbox Monday through Thursday, though if a daily email is too much, you can opt instead for their Weekly Wrap which arrives every Friday.
RISJ Newsletter
The Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism is Oxford University’s research center dedicated to exploring the future of journalism. Its annual Digital News Report is already essential reading for PR pros seeking to understand the challenges journalists face, so we’d highly recommend signing up for the newsletter, too. Sent twice weekly, it features original reporting, online seminars, and insights curated from hundreds of sources – and the RISJ promises you can read it all in around five minutes.
The Publisher Newsletter
From the team behind Media Voices, The Publisher Newsletter operates in tandem with the weekly Publisher Podcast, bringing key takeaways from interviews with senior publishing pros about the brands and products they work on. Both the newsletter and podcast have a handy mission statement and actionable insight for their media audience: leave with at least “one idea worth stealing.”
Digiday Daily Newsletter
Digiday aims to “take a global view of the media and marketing industries and confronts the truths in technology’s disruption of these industries.” The daily newsletter includes Digiday’s top stories of the day, covering topics like subscription models, podcasts, digital video, and more. They also run more targeted daily newsletters about marketing, retail, and work-life.
Best Technology & Social Media Newsletters
Geekout
In Matt Navarra’s weekly Geekout newsletter (released every Friday), you’ll find everything from updates on new LinkedIn features to informed analysis on the ever-changing social media landscape. Plus, each edition gives a useful breakdown of the biggest headlines from all the major social platforms. Geekout also has an active Facebook group with more that 30,000 members if you’re looking for deeper engagement in the social media community.
SEOFOMO
If your brand has a presence online, it doesn’t matter what industry you operate in, you need to know about SEO (search engine optimization). The SEOFOMO newsletter, curated by the Orainti agency’s Aleyda Solis, is a fantastic place to start. The weekly email features the latest SEO news, free resources, trends, tools, and upcoming events to help you sharpen your knowledge on all things search.
The Rundown AI
Artificial intelligence (AI) is impacting nearly every industry and sector right, with the emergence of generative technology like ChatGPT seeing the comms world stand up and take notice. AI is evolving quickly, and as it begins to integrate into everyday PR software and tools, it pays to stay informed. The daily Rundown newsletter tracks all the latest AI news, from OpenAI announcements to how mega-brands like Walmart are utilizing the technology.
Platformer
Ex-The Verge journalists Casey Newton and Zoë Schiffe write Platformer every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, with a view to documenting how social media is reshaping our world. Expect broader coverage with the likes of Apple, Amazon, and Microsoft in mix, alongside emerging firms in the tech space. Each edition takes a deep dive into a particular topic (e.g. “Three reasons we’re in an AI bubble (and for reasons we’re not)”) with shorter analyses and recent post highlights from across social media.
Link in Bio
A fun and informative Substack newsletter from Rachel Karten, Link in Bio is particularly helpful for PR pros who work with social media-focused brands. Content like “Why Campaign Assets Underperform,” “When a TikTok Trend Goes Wrong,” and “My Simple Rule for Participating in Trends” give you an idea of what to expect. Each newsletter features interviews with industry pros, and if you want a little extra, there’s a subscription tier that unlocks a weekly social strategy email.
