Over the past decade, he has run bureaus in Europe and the Middle East, first in Brussels from 2009-2014, during Europe's sovereign debt crisis, then Jerusalem, overseeing coverage of Israel and the Palestinian territories. From 2017-19, he was based in Paris, running coverage of France as Emmanuel Macron took over the presidency and sought to overhaul how the EU is run. Ingrid Melander has been appointed Bureau Chief for Iberia. Ingrid has been Acting Bureau Chief since she arrived in Spain from Paris in November 2018. In her ten months there, she has covered a government collapse, inconclusive elections and a volatile situation in Catalonia. Previously in her native France, Ingrid covered two of Europe's biggest stories of the past decade: the 2015 Paris attacks and the election of President Emmanuel Macron. Amnesty Media Awards 2020
Amnesty International UK is inviting entries for its 28th annual Media Awards, a prestigious set of awards that recognise the vital role journalists play and the serious risks they face in highlighting human rights abuses around the world. Entries can now be submitted at: amnesty-media-awards.org.uk. The closing date for entries is Thursday 23 January 2020 and the award ceremony will be held in London on Wednesday 22 April 2020. Entries must be from a media outlet based in the UK and published or broadcast for the first time in the UK between 1 January and 31 December 2019.

Mind Media Awards 2019
The shortlist has been announced for the Mind Media Awards 2019. The awards cover honest, accurate and sensitive portrayals of mental health in the media over the last 12 months. The categories are Digital Champion, Documentary, Drama, Entertainment, Journalist, News and Current Affairs, Podcast, Publication, Radio, Soaps or Continual Series and Student Journalist. The shortlist can be viewed here. The winners will be announced at a ceremony on 13 November.

Women in Journalism have announced the following events:

In Conversation with Cathy Newman – Thursday 10 October
Cathy Newman is the first woman to be a main presenter on Channel 4 News. She spent over a decade in Fleet Street, latterly with the Financial Times. Since joining Channel 4 News in 2006, she has broadcast a string of investigations and scoops, including harassment allegations against the Liberal Democrat peer Lord Rennard. She also writes about politics for the Telegraph, while her book “Bloody Brilliant Women: Pioneers, Revolutionaries and Geniuses Your History Teacher Forgot to Mention” was published in 2018.
It will be chaired by Eleanor Mills, WIJ chair, editorial director of the Sunday Times and editor of the Sunday Times Magazine. It takes place at the University of Westminster, 309 Regent Street, London, W1B 2UW. Doors open at 6.30pm, for a 7pm start, followed by drinks at 9pm. Book tickets here.

Women in the News: What more can be done? – Thursday 28 October
In 2019, there are far fewer women than men being quoted and featured in the news media. It is crucial for newsrooms to give their audiences a more representative view of society and draw upon diverse voices to tell stories. Join Women in Journalism and Bloomberg for an evening discussion looking at how newsrooms are taking action to increase the representation of women and diverse sources, what still needs to be done, and why it matters.
It takes place at the Bloomberg European Headquarters. Doors open at 5.30pm for a 6.15pm start, followed by drinks and networking until 8.30pm. Find out more about the panelists and book a place here.
