In the latest episode of our Media Coffee interview series, we sit down with Vincent Owino, business reporter at The EastAfrican, to talk about working with journalists located in his region.

Based in Nairobi, Kenya, Vincent has writes business and economic analysis stories for The EastAfrican’s print and digital outlets. He has a keen interest in mining data for visualisation and illustration in his storytelling.

A weekly regional newspaper published by the Nation Media Group, The EastAfrican focuses on promoting regional integration through comprehensive analysis on key economic and political issues of the day.

3 of Vincent’s top tips for working with journalists in Kenya:

  • Always consider the value of your press release and whether it will be of interest to readers of your target outlets
  • Avoid contacting journalists by phone or WhatsApp unless you have an established relationship with them – email is always best
  • Before targeting print media, check the publication schedule to ensure your press releases arrive well before the print deadline
